Cactus is perhaps nature’s most perfect food. According to scientific studies, cactus may prove to be a vital key in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and musculoskeletal disorders because of its abundance of phytochemicals and antioxidants. During cancer research, scientists found that cactus extract enhanced cellular immunity. In another study, cactus was shown to decrease cholesterol levels and help regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics, especially when consumed daily over a long period of time.

In modern medicine, carrots play an important role in the diet of cancer patients. The wild carrot contains high fiber, retinoids, volatile oils, vitamins A, B and C and beta-carotene, alkaloid daucine, potassium salts and carotene. The carotene in carrot helps to stimulate the immune system and has been shown to inhibit cancer development and growth.

The Chinese call this plant food “Jue ming zi,” or “bright eyes.” The seeds or fruit of Cassia tora are commonly used in the treatment of several eye ailments. It also cleanses and refreshes the liver and kidneys. Based on experiments, scientists have discovered that extracts from Cassia tora seeds possess specific anti-tumor properties. And because they also have natural blood pressure-regulating properties, these extracts are frequently used to treat hypertension. Furthermore, in a recent study, subjects who were treated with Cassia tora experienced a significant decrease in blood cholesterol levels.

An ancient and somewhat mysterious herb, Dong Quai has been used for thousands of years to fight epidemics. Used to treat a wide variety of illnesses, Dong Quai, or Angelica, has earned itself a prominent place in the records of herbal medicine. Dong Quai is often called the “queen of all herbs” and contains vitamins A, B12 and E. It has a relaxing and tranquilizing effect on the central nervous system, is able to dissolve blood clots, loosen tight muscles and increase circulation. In Chinese medicine, Dong Quai plays an important role in nourishing the female body; it nourishes the female glandular system, regulates monthly menstruation and relieves symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes and menopausal rheumatism.
